Herringbone European oak hardwood floor in a two-story living room in Los Angeles

Engineered hardwood is the usual choice on Los Angeles slab foundations: it can be glued down or floated over concrete and stays stable through dry summers and air conditioning. Solid hardwood is nailed down over a wood subfloor and can be sanded many times over its life.

How it works

  1. 1. Choose the floor

We bring samples from the hardwood brands we carry, in the widths and finishes you are considering, to see against your cabinets and walls.

  2. 2. Moisture and flatness check

Concrete and wood subfloors are tested and checked for flatness before we order material.

  3. 3. Acclimation and layout

Planks are acclimated per the manufacturer and laid out so seams, borders and doorways land cleanly.

  4. 4. Install

Nail-down, glue-down or floating, as the manufacturer approves for your subfloor.

  5. 5. Finish details

Stair nosing, reducers, baseboard or shoe molding and a final walkthrough.

What affects hardwood installation cost

Installed cost depends on the floor itself (species, width, wear layer, finish), the installation method, removal of existing flooring, subfloor leveling or repair, stairs, baseboards and transitions, and patterns such as herringbone, which take more time and material.

What is in your written quote: the flooring material and quantity, removal and haul-away of the old floor, subfloor preparation such as leveling or plywood repair, the installation method, stairs, baseboards or shoe molding, transitions, and the schedule. Each item is listed separately so you can compare options.

Installation by subfloor

Concrete slab: common in Los Angeles. Engineered hardwood is glued down or floated over the slab with the underlayment or adhesive the manufacturer specifies, after a moisture test.

Raised wood subfloor: plywood or plank subfloors over a crawl space take nail-down solid or engineered hardwood. We check for loose or damaged panels and squeaks and correct them first.

Hillside and older homes: older houses often have uneven floors, mixed subfloors from past remodels or an existing hardwood floor underneath. Flatness and moisture are checked room by room, and the method is chosen to meet the manufacturer's tolerances. See subfloor preparation.

Stairs matched to the floor

Stairs are planned with the floor: solid hardwood treads and risers stained to coordinate, or matching stair nosings where the collection offers them. See custom hardwood stair treads.

Popular choices in Los Angeles

Wide-plank European white oak in natural and light finishes, engineered hardwood for slab homes, herringbone in entries and living rooms, and stair treads matched to the floor.

Engineered hardwood installation over concrete slabs

Many Los Angeles homes sit on concrete slabs, and engineered hardwood is built for them. Before installing, we test the slab for moisture with the method the manufacturer requires, check flatness and grind high spots or level low ones, and choose the installation system the manufacturer approves for that product: full-spread glue-down with a compatible adhesive (some include a moisture barrier), or a floating installation over the specified underlayment.

Skipping any of these steps is the most common reason hardwood over concrete fails, so they are part of every quote. More on subfloor preparation and engineered hardwood. For a deeper look, read our guide to glue-down vs. floating engineered hardwood on concrete.

Wide-plank European white oak installation

Wide planks (7½ inches and up) show the grain beautifully but are less forgiving. They need a flatter subfloor, careful acclimation and a layout planned so long boards run with the main sightlines and end joints are well staggered. Most wide-plank European white oak is engineered for stability and is glued down or nailed down depending on the subfloor and the manufacturer's instructions. Finishing details such as flush stair nosings, reducers and baseboards are planned with the layout.

Herringbone and chevron hardwood installation

Patterned floors are set piece by piece from a layout line, usually from the room's main sightline or entry so the pattern reads straight. Herringbone uses left and right boards; chevron uses angle-cut boards that meet in a point. Both need more cutting, more time and more material allowance than straight plank, which is why patterns cost more to install. Borders and transitions into straight-plank rooms are planned in advance.

Project example: herringbone and plank European oak, Westlake Village

In this whole-home remodel we installed Monarch Plank Lago Devero, a 7-inch engineered European oak with a 3 mm wear layer and an ultra-matte finish. The main floor is laid in herringbone set from the home's main sightlines, the upstairs switches to straight plank, and a floating staircase with custom oak treads was finished to match. What happens at your free hardwood estimate

We come to you; there is no showroom visit. The appointment takes about an hour. We bring hardwood samples in the widths, species and finishes you are considering so you can see them next to your cabinets, walls and light, then measure every room precisely.

While we are there we check the subfloor: moisture on concrete slabs, flatness and anything that needs to come out first, such as carpet or old tile. If the job includes stairs or new baseboards, we look at those too, so the quote covers the whole project.

You then get a written quote with the material, prep and installation spelled out, plus a schedule. There is no charge for the estimate within our Greater Los Angeles service area.

Buying materials only

Most customers have us supply and install the floor, but you can also buy hardwood from us as materials only for your own installer. If you already bought flooring, ask us about installing it; we look at the material and the subfloor at the estimate. See how shopping at home works.

Questions we hear

Engineered or solid hardwood for a Los Angeles home?+

On a concrete slab, engineered is usually the right call because it can be glued or floated over concrete and moves less with humidity. Over a raised wood subfloor, both work. A thicker wear layer lets an engineered floor be refinished later.

Can you install herringbone?+

Yes. Herringbone and chevron take more layout and cutting time than straight planks, and several of the collections we carry come in herringbone versions.

Do you match stairs to the new floor?+

Yes. We build and finish stair treads and risers to match, including carpet-to-wood stair conversions.

Is the estimate free?+

Yes. We bring samples to your home, measure and quote materials plus installation at no charge.

How long does hardwood installation take?+

It depends on the square footage, the installation method, how much subfloor preparation is needed, stairs and patterns such as herringbone. Your written quote includes the schedule for your home.

Can I stay at home while you install?+

Usually, yes. We work room by room and plan around the parts of the house you need. See living at home during flooring installation.

Does hardwood need to acclimate before installation?+

Many manufacturers require it. We follow each manufacturer's acclimation and moisture instructions and check moisture in the subfloor and the boards before installing.

Do you remove the old floor?+

Yes. Removal and haul-away of carpet, tile, laminate or old wood can be part of the job, listed as its own line in your quote.
