Hardwood flooring and installation in Brentwood

Engineered or solid hardwood?

Both are real wood. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its thickness and is nailed to a wood subfloor; it can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered hardwood is a real-wood top layer bonded to a cross-layered core, which moves less with humidity and can be glued down or floated over concrete slabs as well as installed over plywood.

What we recommend in Brentwood

Wide-plank engineered European white oak is the usual choice, glued down or floated on slabs and nail-down over plywood where the manufacturer allows. Our nearby Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades projects both used engineered hardwood.

Engineered hardwood and European white oak in Brentwood

Our Santa Monica project used 7.5-inch engineered European white oak in random lengths from 1 to 6 feet, a look that also suits Brentwood homes. We bring European white oak samples in several widths so you can compare them at home.

Staircases & stair treads

Stairs are quoted with the floor: hardwood treads and risers, including curved staircases like the one in our Pacific Palisades project, or stair noses for laminate and vinyl when the collection offers a matching part.

Laminate flooring installation in Brentwood

Laminate works in bedrooms, offices and rentals away from wet areas; waterproof-rated lines are better near entries and kitchens.

Laminate has a wood-fiber core under a hard, scratch-resistant surface and usually installs as a floating click floor. Water resistance varies by collection, so we show you each product's rating and warranty terms before you choose.

Luxury vinyl plank installation in Brentwood

Luxury vinyl plank and SPC suit condo kitchens and baths, laundry rooms and rentals.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and rigid-core SPC have a vinyl core that does not swell from surface water. The installed floor still is not floodproof, and the subfloor has to be flat and dry for the click joints to hold.

How flooring installation works in Brentwood

  1. Removal. We take out carpet, tile, laminate or old wood and haul it away; removal is a separate line in your estimate.
  2. Flatness check. The subfloor is checked against the flooring manufacturer's flatness tolerance. High spots are ground or sanded and low spots filled with a compatible patch or leveler.
  3. Moisture testing. Concrete slabs and wood subfloors are tested with the method the manufacturer requires before anything is installed.
  4. Installation method. Nail-down over plywood, glue-down or floating over concrete, or click-together floating floors for laminate and vinyl, matched to the product's instructions.
  5. Transitions and baseboards. We plan thresholds and reducers between rooms and either reinstall your baseboards or install new MDF baseboards in a choice of profiles.

For condos, tell us the building's work hours and flooring rules when you book. At the visit we bring samples, measure and check the subfloor, then quote materials and installation, or materials only. More on floor removal and subfloor preparation and our flooring installation service.

Materials only, or materials with installation

Buy your flooring from us and have our team install it, or order materials only for your own contractor. If you have already bought flooring, ask us about installing it.

Stairs are quoted with the floor: hardwood treads and risers, or stair noses for laminate and vinyl when the collection makes a matching part. We confirm what is available for your floor before you order.

What matters for floors in Brentwood

One floor through larger homes

When one wide-plank floor runs through many rooms, plank direction and transitions are planned so it reads as one surface, as in our Pacific Palisades project, where the floor continues from the living room up the stairs.

Mid-century houses

Mid-century homes often suit quieter, natural-tone oak. We bring several widths and finishes so you can judge them against the architecture and your light.

Condos on the flats

Many condo associations require an underlayment with a minimum sound rating before hard flooring replaces carpet. Send us your building's rules and we choose an underlayment that meets them before we quote.

Light wide-plank engineered hardwood floor leading to a curved staircase in a two-story Pacific Palisades entry

Project in Pacific Palisades, not Brentwood

A recent project in Pacific Palisades

We don't have a finished Brentwood project to show yet. This is one of our recent jobs in Pacific Palisades: light, wide-plank engineered hardwood through a two-story entry, with a curved staircase finished in matching treads and risers. It shows the kind of preparation and finish work we bring to every home.

Can you match an existing floor in part of the house?+

Often. We bring samples to compare species, width and color and plan the transitions where new and old meet.

Do you serve Brentwood condos?+

Yes. Send us your association's flooring rules and we quote an underlayment that meets them.

Can I buy materials only?+

Yes. You can buy flooring with installation or materials only.
