How to measure your rooms
Measure the length and width of each room in feet at the widest points, and multiply them for the area. For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles and add each one as its own row. Include closets, hallways and any area under appliances that will get new flooring.
Round up rather than down, and note doorways and transitions, where the new floor meets tile or carpet. Those details do not change the square footage much, but they matter for the installation quote.
Choosing a waste allowance
Every installation has cuts at walls, doorways and around cabinets, and some boards are set aside for color or defects. A common starting point is 5 to 10 percent extra for a straight lay in simple rooms. Diagonal layouts, rooms with many angles, and patterns such as herringbone and chevron need more.
The right number depends on the product, the board length and your rooms, so check the manufacturer's installation guide and confirm with your installer before you order. Keeping a few spare boxes from the same production run is useful for future repairs.
Stairs, trim and transitions
Stairs are not included in floor square footage. Treads, risers and nosings are ordered by the step and matched to the floor; see stair treads and stair installation. Baseboards, quarter round and transition strips are measured in linear feet and quoted separately.

Questions we hear
How much extra flooring should I order for waste?+
A common starting point is 5 to 10 percent extra for a straight lay in simple rooms, and more for diagonal layouts, herringbone or chevron and rooms with many angles. Check the manufacturer's installation guide and confirm with your installer, because the right allowance depends on the room shapes and the product.
How do I measure a room with an odd shape?+
Split it into rectangles, measure the length and width of each, and add them as separate rows. Include closets and the space under appliances that will be floored, and measure in feet.
Where do I find the square feet per box?+
It is printed on the carton and listed by the manufacturer, and many of our product pages show it as square feet per carton. Enter that number to turn your total into a box count.
Do stairs count in the square footage?+
Usually not. Stairs are covered with treads, risers and nosings that are ordered by the step, so count them separately. Read more about our stair work on the stair treads page.
