Hardwood flooring installation in Pasadena

In our Pasadena project, several rooms were down to bare plywood: we prepared the subfloor, filled low areas with leveling compound, then installed a dark wide-plank hardwood floor. That kind of preparation is where most of our Pasadena work starts. We bring samples to your home, check the subfloor and quote the whole job.

Popular here: Engineered and solid hardwood, wide-plank oak, stair treads and nosings, laminate and luxury vinyl plank.

Hardwood flooring and installation in Pasadena

Engineered or solid hardwood?

Both are real wood. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its thickness and is nailed to a wood subfloor; it can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered hardwood is a real-wood top layer bonded to a cross-layered core, which moves less with humidity and can be glued down or floated over concrete slabs as well as installed over plywood.

What we recommend in Pasadena

Wide-plank engineered hardwood suits remodels and new rooms; over raised wood subfloors, solid hardwood is also an option. Our Pasadena project shows a dark wide-plank floor installed after plywood preparation and leveling.

Staircases & stair treads

Stairs are quoted with the floor: hardwood treads and risers for a full staircase, or matching stair noses where the collection offers them, subject to product availability. See our Pasadena project for how a staircase is prepared during a floor installation.

Laminate flooring installation in Pasadena

Laminate is a lower-cost option for bedrooms, offices and rentals, with a hard, scratch-resistant surface. Laminate projects can include new MDF baseboards in a choice of profiles.

Laminate has a wood-fiber core under a hard, scratch-resistant surface and usually installs as a floating click floor. Water resistance varies by collection, so we show you each product's rating and warranty terms before you choose.

Luxury vinyl plank installation in Pasadena

Luxury vinyl plank and SPC suit kitchens, laundry rooms, baths and homes with pets.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and rigid-core SPC have a vinyl core that does not swell from surface water. The installed floor still is not floodproof, and the subfloor has to be flat and dry for the click joints to hold.

How flooring installation works in Pasadena

  1. Removal. We take out carpet, tile, laminate or old wood and haul it away; removal is a separate line in your estimate.
  2. Flatness check. The subfloor is checked against the flooring manufacturer's flatness tolerance. High spots are ground or sanded and low spots filled with a compatible patch or leveler.
  3. Moisture testing. Concrete slabs and wood subfloors are tested with the method the manufacturer requires before anything is installed.
  4. Installation method. Nail-down over plywood, glue-down or floating over concrete, or click-together floating floors for laminate and vinyl, matched to the product's instructions.
  5. Transitions and baseboards. We plan thresholds and reducers between rooms and either reinstall your baseboards or install new MDF baseboards in a choice of profiles.

Plywood and leveling work is quoted as part of the job after we look at the subfloor. See the Pasadena subfloor-to-hardwood project for each stage. More on floor removal and subfloor preparation and our flooring installation service.

What matters for floors in Pasadena

Subfloor preparation comes first

Older Pasadena houses often have raised wood subfloors, and remodels frequently leave rooms at bare plywood. We check the plywood, fasteners and flatness against the flooring manufacturer's tolerance and level low spots with a compatible product before any hardwood goes down.

Matching new floors to existing rooms

When new hardwood meets an existing floor, we plan the transitions and bring stain samples so you can compare colors in your own light. Aged wood changes color, so expect a close coordination rather than a guaranteed exact match.

Floors and stairs together

On the Pasadena project the staircase was stripped back to its treads and risers, with the new floor meeting the bottom step. Our flooring collections offer matching or coordinating stair noses, subject to product availability, and we can provide custom hardwood stair treads.

Pasadena flooring questions

Can you install hardwood over an uneven plywood subfloor?+

Usually, after preparation. We check the plywood and its flatness, re-fasten or repair as needed and fill low areas with a leveling product that suits the subfloor and the flooring manufacturer's requirements.

Can new hardwood go in during a remodel?+

It can, if the work is sequenced and the floor is protected. On our Pasadena project the floor went in while other work in the house was still underway.

Can you match new hardwood to my existing floors?+

Often. We bring stain samples to compare against the existing floor and plan transitions where new and old meet.

Can I buy materials only?+

Yes. You can buy flooring with installation or materials only.
