European white oak flooring in Los Angeles

European white oak is the floor we are asked about most. It has a calm, even grain, takes light natural and white-washed finishes well, and is milled into the long, wide planks that suit open Los Angeles floor plans.

We carry European and French oak from many of the brands in our catalog, in widths from about 5 inches to 9½ inches and wider, plus herringbone and chevron. We bring full boards to your home so you can judge color and grain in your own light.

How it works

  1. 1. See full boards at home

We bring European oak samples in the widths, grades and finishes you are considering.

  2. 2. Pick grade and finish

Clear grades read calmer; character grades show knots and color variation. Oiled, matte lacquer and UV finishes wear differently.

  3. 3. Check the subfloor

Most European oak we sell is engineered, so it can be glued or floated over concrete slabs once moisture tests pass.

  4. 4. Install and match stairs

Planks laid out to your rooms, with stair treads and nosings milled or ordered to match.

European white oak vs. American white oak

Both are white oak but different species. European oak usually reads warmer and more even and is commonly sold in wide, long engineered planks; American white oak is a little harder and shows more color variation. Our European vs. American white oak guide compares color, grain, hardness, grades and finishes side by side.

French oak is European oak grown in France. Several brands we carry label it separately, and product pages show the species exactly as each manufacturer lists it.

What affects the cost of European oak floors

We do not publish prices because European oak varies widely. The main factors are plank width and length (wider and longer costs more), grade (clear vs. character), wear-layer thickness (a thicker top layer can be refinished more times), finish type, pattern (herringbone and chevron take more material and labor), and how much subfloor prep your home needs.

To size the job before we visit, use our flooring calculator: enter each room, pick a waste allowance and add the square feet per box from the product page.

Where European oak works in a Los Angeles home

Engineered European oak is a good fit for slab homes in the Valley, raised-foundation homes on the Westside and coastal homes where humidity moves. For kitchens it works well with a durable finish and quick cleanup of spills; for bathrooms and laundry rooms we usually recommend a waterproof floor instead.

European white oak floors and stairs

Many European white oak projects include the staircase. We install solid white oak treads, risers and landings planned with the new floor, and make stain samples on the tread stock so you can approve the color. See hardwood stair installation.

Wide-plank European oak collections we carry

These collections include European or French oak planks 7.5 inches wide or wider, the same kind of floor as our Los Angeles and Santa Monica projects further down this page. Widths come from the manufacturers' specifications; each collection page lists the colors, wear layer and approved installation methods. Call for pricing.

Questions we hear

Is European white oak engineered or solid?+

Most of the European oak in our catalog is engineered: a real oak top layer over a plywood or hardwood core. A few lines are available solid. Each product page lists the construction the manufacturer specifies.

How wide can European oak planks be?+

Many collections run 7½ to 9½ inches, and some go wider. Wider planks show more of the grain and suit large rooms; we bring a few widths to compare in your space.

Can European oak floors be refinished?+

Yes, if the wear layer is thick enough. Floors with a thicker top veneer can be sanded and refinished more times over their life. The wear layer is listed on every product page.

How much does European white oak flooring cost?+

It depends on width, grade, wear layer, finish and pattern, plus installation and prep. Call for pricing on specific floors, or book a free in-home estimate for an installed quote.
