This Santa Monica home now has a light, natural European white oak floor running through its living spaces. Los Angeles Hardwoods installed engineered European white oak in 7.5-inch-wide planks with random lengths from 1 to 6 feet. The wide boards and varied lengths give the rooms a calm, open feel that suits the home's white walls and contemporary furnishings. We also assisted with the cabinet and countertop installation on this project.

A beautiful European white oak flooring transformation
The first thing you notice in this home is the color of the floor. The European white oak has a light, natural tone that keeps the rooms bright and lets the white walls, the marble-look fireplace surround and the soft furniture stand out without competing with them. In the living room, the planks run from the front entry past the fireplace toward the dining area, so the main living spaces read as one continuous floor.
Plank width makes a big difference in a contemporary room. At 7.5 inches, each board shows more of the oak's grain, and there are fewer seams across the floor than with narrow strips. That gives the space a cleaner, more relaxed look, especially in open rooms like these where you see a long stretch of floor at once.
The random lengths, from 1 to 6 feet, add natural variation. Shorter and longer boards mixed together break up repeating patterns, so the floor looks like real wood laid board by board rather than a printed surface. Across a large area, that variation keeps a light floor from looking flat.
Light European white oak is one of the most requested looks in contemporary Los Angeles homes. It works with white and gray walls, black accents, natural stone and warm wood furniture, and it keeps rooms feeling open and full of daylight. See more about European white oak flooring.

Considering a floor like this?
Why engineered hardwood suits Santa Monica homes
Engineered hardwood is real wood: a hardwood top layer, the part you see and walk on, bonded to a cross-layered core. Because the layers run in different directions, an engineered plank resists expanding and shrinking with humidity better than a solid board of the same width. That stability is a big reason wide planks like these 7.5-inch boards are usually made as engineered flooring.
From the top, engineered and solid hardwood look the same; the grain, color and texture come from real oak. Depending on the thickness of the top layer, many engineered floors can be sanded and refinished later in their life.
Preparation matters as much as the floor itself. The subfloor has to be flat, solid and dry enough for the product chosen. Many homes sit on concrete slabs, where moisture testing and leveling are often part of the job, and the right installation method depends on the subfloor and on what the manufacturer allows for that floor. Our guide to engineered hardwood over concrete explains the options.
Near the coast, humidity deserves attention. Engineered hardwood handles seasonal changes better than solid wide planks, but it is not waterproof. Wipe up spills promptly and keep indoor humidity within the range the manufacturer recommends. Whether a product is right for a particular room depends on its construction, the installation conditions and the manufacturer's requirements, and we go over those at the estimate.
Day to day, care is simple: sweep or vacuum regularly, use a cleaner made for wood floors, put felt pads under furniture and use mats at entries to keep grit off the finish.
More than hardwood flooring: cabinets and countertops
On this project we also assisted with the cabinet and countertop installation. Planning the floor, cabinets and countertops together helps the finishes work as one design. Here the light oak floor sits next to white cabinetry and marble-look countertops, so the kitchen stays bright and connects visually with the living spaces.

Questions about this project
Is engineered hardwood a good choice near the coast in Santa Monica?+
It is a common choice. Engineered hardwood's cross-layered core handles seasonal humidity changes better than solid wide planks. It is not waterproof, so spills should be wiped up and indoor humidity kept within the manufacturer's range. Whether a product suits a specific room depends on its construction, the subfloor and the manufacturer's requirements.
Why choose 7.5-inch planks?+
Wider boards show more of the oak's grain and create fewer seams, which gives open rooms a calmer, more continuous look. Wide planks are usually made as engineered flooring because the construction keeps them more stable.
What do random lengths from 1 to 6 feet do?+
Mixing short and long boards breaks up repeating patterns, so the floor reads like real wood laid board by board, especially across a large open area.
Can you bring European white oak samples to my Santa Monica home?+
Yes. We bring samples to your home, measure every room and give you a written estimate for materials and installation, or materials only.
