Hardwood flooring in Palos Verdes Estates

Palos Verdes Estates was planned in the 1920s around Spanish and Mediterranean homes on the bluffs above the ocean. Coastal fog and humidity shape which floors last here, so we focus on engineered European oak and finishes suited to the climate.

Popular here: Engineered European white oak, herringbone, wire-brushed oak, stair treads.

Hardwood flooring and installation in Palos Verdes Estates

Engineered or solid hardwood?

Both are real wood. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its thickness and is nailed to a wood subfloor; it can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered hardwood is a real-wood top layer bonded to a cross-layered core, which moves less with humidity and can be glued down or floated over concrete slabs as well as installed over plywood.

What we recommend in Palos Verdes Estates

Older homes in Palos Verdes Estates may have raised wood subfloors, which allow nail-down solid or engineered hardwood; newer homes and additions are often on slab. Engineered oak is the safer choice for wide planks in coastal humidity.

Staircases & stair treads

Hillside lots mean many homes have multiple levels. We replace carpeted stairs with oak treads and risers matched to the floor.

Laminate flooring installation in Palos Verdes Estates

Laminate is an option for bedrooms, offices and guest rooms where you want a wood look with strong scratch resistance, using a waterproof-rated line near kitchens.

Laminate has a wood-fiber core under a hard, scratch-resistant surface and usually installs as a floating click floor. Water resistance varies by collection, so we show you each product's rating and warranty terms before you choose.

Luxury vinyl plank installation in Palos Verdes Estates

Waterproof luxury vinyl plank suits kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and lower levels that open onto patios.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and rigid-core SPC have a vinyl core that does not swell from surface water. The installed floor still is not floodproof, and the subfloor has to be flat and dry for the click joints to hold.

How flooring installation works in Palos Verdes Estates

  1. Removal. We take out carpet, tile, laminate or old wood and haul it away; removal is a separate line in your estimate.
  2. Flatness check. The subfloor is checked against the flooring manufacturer's flatness tolerance. High spots are ground or sanded and low spots filled with a compatible patch or leveler.
  3. Moisture testing. Concrete slabs and wood subfloors are tested with the method the manufacturer requires before anything is installed.
  4. Installation method. Nail-down over plywood, glue-down or floating over concrete, or click-together floating floors for laminate and vinyl, matched to the product's instructions.
  5. Transitions and baseboards. We plan thresholds and reducers between rooms and either reinstall your baseboards or install new MDF baseboards in a choice of profiles.

Older homes can have uneven subfloors; we check flatness against the flooring manufacturer's tolerance and level before installing. More on floor removal and subfloor preparation and our flooring installation service.

Materials only, or materials with installation

Buy your flooring from us and have our team install it, or order materials only for your own contractor. If you have already bought flooring, ask us about installing it.

Stairs are quoted with the floor: hardwood treads and risers, or stair noses for laminate and vinyl when the collection makes a matching part. We confirm what is available for your floor before you order.

What matters for floors in Palos Verdes Estates

Coastal stability

Marine-layer humidity favors engineered oak over solid wood, especially in wide planks.

Spanish and Mediterranean homes

Warm-toned oak, herringbone and wire-brushed textures suit the architecture common in the city.

Ocean-view homes

Large windows bring strong light, so we discuss UV-resistant finishes and tones that age well.
