For this Los Angeles home, our team installed 9.5-inch-wide European white oak engineered hardwood with a substantial 4mm real-wood wear layer. The boards have a natural, warm oak color with visible grain and character knots, and their width gives the floor a calm, generous look that suits contemporary rooms with white walls and clean lines.

A closer look at this Los Angeles hardwood flooring project
The photos were taken while work in the house was still underway, with appliance boxes waiting to go in and the stair treads wrapped for protection, but the floor itself is down and easy to read.
At 9.5 inches, each plank shows a long stretch of European white oak grain. Some boards carry straight grain, others cathedral patterns, and many have small dark character knots scattered along their length. The color is a warm, natural oak tone rather than a gray or heavily stained look, so the wood itself does the work.
Wide planks change how a floor reads. With fewer boards across the room there are fewer long seams, and the individual boards and their grain become part of the design. Here the planks run the length of the open kitchen and living area, so the eye follows the boards through the space. Whether wider boards suit a particular room depends on its size, light and layout, which is why we look at samples in your own home.

Why choose 9.5-inch European white oak engineered hardwood?
A distinctive wide-plank look. Compared with 5- or 7-inch boards, 9.5-inch planks show more of each board's grain and create a more relaxed, open pattern across the floor. They are a strong choice for open plans and rooms where long sightlines show off the wood.
European white oak. It has a clear, fine grain with natural variation, takes light and natural finishes well, and works in both contemporary and transitional interiors. That is why it is one of the most requested species in Los Angeles homes. See more about European white oak flooring.
Engineered construction. Engineered hardwood combines a real hardwood wear layer with a cross-layered manufactured core. The core makes wide boards more stable through changes in humidity than solid planks of the same width, which is why most wide-plank white oak is engineered.
A 4mm wear layer. The wear layer is the real oak you see and walk on, and 4mm is a substantial hardwood veneer. Future refinishing potential depends on the manufacturer's specifications, the installation, the condition of the floor and how much wear layer remains, so we don't promise a set number of refinishes.
Professional installation. Wide planks are less forgiving than narrow ones. A good result depends on evaluating the subfloor, testing moisture, acclimating the flooring where the manufacturer requires it and following the manufacturer's installation guidelines for that product. Matching hardwood stair noses and custom stair treads
Floors and stairs are seen together, so we help homeowners plan them together. Our flooring collections offer matching or coordinating stair-nose solutions, subject to product availability, so the edge where the floor meets the stairs can carry the same color and finish.
Matching stair noses. A coordinating stair-nose profile finishes landings and the top step cleanly where the hardwood floor turns down the stairs. The profile has to suit the flooring system and its thickness, and it is installed with the floor so the transition is flush and consistent.
Custom hardwood stair treads. When homeowners want a more tailored staircase, we can also provide custom hardwood stair treads in coordinating species and finishes, including wide-plank looks and full staircase remodels. Wood varies by batch and finish, so expect a close coordination rather than a perfect match across every product. Stair components also have to be compatible with the selected flooring and with applicable building requirements.

Questions about this project
Is 9.5 inches too wide for a hardwood floor?+
Not for engineered hardwood made for it. Wide planks are usually engineered because the cross-layered core keeps them more stable than solid boards of the same width. They do need a flat, dry subfloor and an installation method the manufacturer approves.
What does a 4mm wear layer mean?+
It is the thickness of real European white oak on top of the plank. 4mm is a substantial wear layer. Whether and how often it can be refinished later depends on the manufacturer's specifications, the installation, the floor's condition and how much wear layer remains.
Can you match stair nosings to my new hardwood floor?+
Our flooring collections offer matching or coordinating stair-nose solutions, subject to product availability. We can also provide custom hardwood stair treads. Because wood varies by batch and finish, expect a close coordination rather than an identical match.
Do you install hardwood flooring throughout Los Angeles?+
