In a whole-home remodel we designed and built in Westlake Village, we laid Monarch Plank Lago Devero, a 7-inch engineered European oak with a 3 mm wear layer, in herringbone on the main floor and as straight wide plank upstairs, so both levels share one color and finish. See the Westlake Village project.
How it works
1. Compare patterns at home
We bring herringbone and chevron samples in the sizes and finishes you are considering.
2. Choose the layout
We set the pattern from the room's main sightline, such as the entry, a fireplace or a hallway axis.
3. Prepare the subfloor
Patterns show every dip, so the subfloor is moisture-tested and flattened first.
4. Install and finish the edges
Borders, transitions and stair nosings are planned so the pattern ends cleanly at every edge.
Herringbone vs. chevron
Herringbone boards are cut square at the ends and laid in a staggered zigzag, so each board's end meets the side of the next. Chevron boards are cut at an angle at the ends, so they meet in a clean point and form a continuous V. Herringbone reads as a woven texture; chevron reads as a stronger arrow-like line.
Both can be laid in different board sizes. Longer, wider boards suit large rooms and open plans; shorter boards give a finer, more traditional pattern.
Layout is what makes a pattern look right
A pattern floor has a centerline, and where it sits decides how the room reads. We lay out from the main sightline so the pattern looks straight from the front door, and we plan how it meets walls, cabinets, other rooms and the stairs before installation starts. Some homeowners run herringbone in the main living areas and switch to straight plank in bedrooms or upstairs, as in our Westlake Village project.
What affects the cost of a pattern floor
Pattern floors take more labor and usually more material than a straight lay, because of the layout work and the cuts at every edge. The main factors are the product, board size, the room shapes, borders, subfloor preparation and stairs.

Patterns need a larger waste allowance than straight plank. Our flooring calculator lets you add one for a first estimate; we confirm the exact quantity from the layout and the manufacturer’s guide.

Questions we hear
Is herringbone real hardwood?+
The herringbone and chevron floors we sell are real wood, most of them engineered: a hardwood top layer over a stable core. Each product page lists the construction the manufacturer specifies.
Can herringbone go over a concrete slab?+
Engineered herringbone can usually be glued down over a slab once moisture testing passes the manufacturer's limits. We check your slab at the estimate.
Can you match stairs to a herringbone floor?+
Yes. Stairs are usually finished in straight treads and nosings coordinated with the floor's color. Matching nosings are available for many, but not all, floors, so we confirm before you order.
How much does herringbone flooring cost?+
It depends on the product, board size, layout and prep. Call for pricing or book a free in-home estimate for an installed quote.
