Hardwood flooring and installation in Rancho Palos Verdes

Engineered or solid hardwood?

Both are real wood. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its thickness and is nailed to a wood subfloor; it can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered hardwood is a real-wood top layer bonded to a cross-layered core, which moves less with humidity and can be glued down or floated over concrete slabs as well as installed over plywood.

What we recommend in Rancho Palos Verdes

Engineered hardwood is the usual choice on the peninsula's concrete slabs and in coastal humidity. In homes with raised wood subfloors, solid hardwood is possible. Either way, the slab or subfloor has to be flat and dry enough for the product, and we test it before quoting.

Engineered hardwood and European white oak in Rancho Palos Verdes

Light European white oak with a matte finish is the most common choice in Rancho Palos Verdes, especially in ocean-view rooms where it keeps the space bright. For larger custom homes, 9- and 10-inch engineered planks or herringbone in the entry are frequent requests.

Staircases & stair treads

Split-level and two-story homes here often have carpeted stairs between hardwood levels. We install hardwood treads and risers stained to the floor, or matching stair noses for laminate and vinyl where the collection offers them. We confirm the stair parts for your floor before ordering.

Laminate flooring installation in Rancho Palos Verdes

Laminate is a cost-effective option for bedrooms, home offices and rentals. In kitchens and near patio doors, choose a waterproof-rated laminate and follow its installation limits.

Laminate has a wood-fiber core under a hard, scratch-resistant surface and usually installs as a floating click floor. Water resistance varies by collection, so we show you each product's rating and warranty terms before you choose.

Luxury vinyl plank installation in Rancho Palos Verdes

Waterproof luxury vinyl and SPC suit kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and condos, and they float over slabs that have minor cracks once those are repaired and flattened.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and rigid-core SPC have a vinyl core that does not swell from surface water. The installed floor still is not floodproof, and the subfloor has to be flat and dry for the click joints to hold.

How flooring installation works in Rancho Palos Verdes

  1. Removal. We take out carpet, tile, laminate or old wood and haul it away; removal is a separate line in your estimate.
  2. Flatness check. The subfloor is checked against the flooring manufacturer's flatness tolerance. High spots are ground or sanded and low spots filled with a compatible patch or leveler.
  3. Moisture testing. Concrete slabs and wood subfloors are tested with the method the manufacturer requires before anything is installed.
  4. Installation method. Nail-down over plywood, glue-down or floating over concrete, or click-together floating floors for laminate and vinyl, matched to the product's instructions.
  5. Transitions and baseboards. We plan thresholds and reducers between rooms and either reinstall your baseboards or install new MDF baseboards in a choice of profiles.

If your home is in an area with land movement, we note any slab cracks or changes in flatness at the estimate and discuss whether a floating floor or structural repairs come first. More on floor removal and subfloor preparation and our flooring installation service.

Materials only, or materials with installation

Buy your flooring from us and have our team install it, or order materials only for your own contractor. If you have already bought flooring, ask us about installing it.

Stairs are quoted with the floor: hardwood treads and risers, or stair noses for laminate and vinyl when the collection makes a matching part. We confirm what is available for your floor before you order.

What matters for floors in Rancho Palos Verdes

Coastal air and big windows

Marine-layer humidity and strong ocean light favor engineered hardwood, UV-stable finishes and window treatments that protect the floor.

Mid-century homes on slab

Many ranch homes here sit on concrete slabs, which suit engineered hardwood, laminate and luxury vinyl once the slab is tested and flattened.

Ground movement in some neighborhoods

In areas affected by land movement, a new floor cannot fix a shifting slab. We check for cracks and changes in flatness and tell you if structural work should come first.

Rancho Palos Verdes flooring questions

Is engineered hardwood a good idea near the coast in Rancho Palos Verdes?+

Yes. Its cross-layered core handles humidity changes better than wide solid boards. We test the subfloor, follow the manufacturer's acclimation instructions and leave the expansion space it calls for.

My home has slab cracks. Can you still install new floors?+

It depends on the cause. Hairline shrinkage cracks are common and can often be repaired and flattened. Cracks that keep growing, or a slab that is shifting, point to a structural or soil issue that needs to be addressed first. We look at it during the estimate and tell you plainly.

What floor is best for an ocean-view room with a lot of sun?+

Choose a finish with UV protection and a natural or light tone, which shows fading less than dark stains. Window film or shades help any floor last longer.

Can you install luxury vinyl in a condo?+

Yes. We check the association's underlayment and sound requirements first and supply an underlayment that meets them.

Do you remove the old floor?+

Yes. Removal of carpet, tile, laminate or wood, plus disposal, is quoted as its own line in the estimate.
